head above water

The Head series comes out of my experiences in dance. When the dance flows, there's a deep sense of uplift, longing, and joy. It's like sinking into a hot bath, or breathing in fresh cold air, or laughing out loud. Above all, it is a surrender to the joy of the moment.

I find the element of water repeating in my work. That is especially true now, after almost five years of living in the high desert. Water here is not a calm and soothing force. When it comes, it storms in, immediate and urgent, or else remains most desperately absent. That place of longing is painful, but rich; filled with ache and possibility.

"What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well."
